Introduction to the Cannes Film Festival

The Cannes Film Festival is one of the most prestigious events in the film industry, and this year’s edition was no exception. The festival kicked off with a dazzling opening ceremony on Tuesday evening, where Robert De Niro was honored with a Palm of Honor. However, De Niro used his time in the spotlight to defend democracy and aim at the American President.

Defending Democracy and Art

De Niro emphasized the importance of democracy and art, stating that "in my country, we fight like hell for democracy that we once kept gross." He highlighted that art is a threat to those who oppose freedom and diversity, and that it has the power to bring people together. De Niro criticized the American President for reducing financing and support for art, humanities, and education, and for imposing a 100 percent tariff on films produced outside the United States.

A Call to Action

De Niro urged people to take action, saying "we have to act and we have to act now." He emphasized the importance of organizing, protesting, and voting, and encouraged everyone who cares about freedom to take a stand. De Niro’s speech was met with applause and cheers from the audience, and it set the tone for the rest of the festival.

The Opening Ceremony

The opening ceremony was a glamorous event that brought together stars, press, and international film insiders. The night’s program included the world premiere of Amélie Bonnin’s film "Run a Day," a romantic dramedy that tells the story of a Parisian cook who returns to her hometown and reconnects with her past. The film was shown in 382 French cinemas, and it was a special occasion for the French film industry.

Security and Star Power

The festival organizers took security very seriously, with 500 security officers deployed throughout the festival and around the palace. The presence of stars such as Halle Berry, Jeremy Strong, and Juliette Binoche added to the glamour of the event. The competition jury, which included Berry and other international stars, participated in the ceremony and delivered the international star power.

Fashion and Politics

The festival’s updated dressing policy was a topic of discussion during the press conference, with Halle Berry revealing that she had to change her planned dress for the opening evening due to the new rules. The policy forbids nudity and "voluminous" dresses with long trains, and Berry said she had to make a last-minute change to comply with the rules.

What to Expect

As the 2025 edition of the Cannes Film Festival continues, fans can expect a mix of cinema, fashion, politics, and more. The festival will showcase a range of films, from romantic dramedies to documentaries, and will feature a star-studded lineup of actors and directors. With its unique blend of glamour and substance, the Cannes Film Festival is an event not to be missed.
