Last-Minute Changes to Cannes Rules Affect Red Carpet Looks
The last changes to the rules could affect brands that have planned voluminous or sheer looks for this year’s event. The red carpet look is planned months in advance, and many stars wear couture looks that need hours of craftsmanship at enormous costs.
Impact on Designers and Stars
Although no one’s opening look is affected, many could be. "I am sure that some people who have spent months with custom are panicking, what a shame after so much hard work," says a stylist. "It’s very late in the day." Another stylist agrees, "Fortunately, this does not affect the appearance that we styled and prepared in advance. However, it could have caused a big problem, especially since my customer has already arrived in Cannes."
Challenges for Young Designers
It is particularly difficult for young designers who may have created a look for this year’s carpet and, unlike the larger brands, are unable to support a last-minute change financially and logistically. "Then they lose money and lose the press," says an expert.
Expected Appearances
The expected big names on the carpet this year include several stars celebrating new films. Both have worn dramatic skirts and trains on several events on the red carpet from the Golden Globes to the Oscars. Another star will probably also be present for her directorial debut and leading role in a new film.
Red Carpet Trends
When it comes to the red carpet, naked and voluminous appearances have recently become a staple. However, if you scroll through galleries from the Cannes Film Festival, there are actually far fewer naked and crazy clothes than other awards and red carpets. The average festival participant usually wears a final dress.
Unlikely Winners
There may be some unlikely winners, such as the PR companies that build exhibition rooms on La Croisette. "It’s a big moment," says an expert. "You can somehow play in the [saying] Ok, come in the exhibition room."
