Game Server Closures

More than a dozen large games will close their servers this year, resulting in players losing access to important functions. Favorites such as Resident Evil, WWE, and Madden NFL will be on the hit list in the coming months.

Upcoming Closures

The action role-player Dauntless, originally released in 2019, will be the first to face the chop. From May 29, the servers will be permanently closed on all platforms, including Windows, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch. The team made this decision due to the negative public reception and the subsequent decline in active players. This also means that the previously announced season 2 will no longer continue.

Another title going offline this month is Multiversus, which features various Warner Bros characters from DC, Looney Tunes, and more. The servers for online play will be closed on May 30th. However, developers say that there will be an option to play Multiversus offline via the local gameplay mode, either solo against AI opponents or with up to three friends.

Further Closures Later This Year

In June, there will be five game server closures, followed by two others in July, two in September, two in October, and one in December. The full list of server closures for the rest of 2025 is as follows:

  • Xdefiant – June 3
  • The first offspring – June 19th
  • Black desert – June 26th
  • Resident Evil Reverse – June 29th
  • Madden NFL 21 – June 30
  • Arizona Sunshine – July 1st
  • Skyworld – July 1st
  • Danmachi Battle Chronicle – September 29th
  • WWE 2K24 – September 30th
  • Madden NFL 22 – October 20th
  • PGA Tour 2K21 – October 30th
  • NBA 2K24 – December 31st

Why Do Games Close?

In most online games, technology companies have to maintain high servers to manage everything, which is not a cheap business. As people move on and leave older games behind, there comes a point at which it is no longer practical to continue offering server access, so studios switch them off. For some games that are completely online, this can make them completely useless. However, others may have the possibility to continue playing solo. Usually, you should see an outstanding notification in the game warning you about what to do, provided you still play the game.
