Introduction to the Film Adaptation
The feature adaptation of the recognized game "Prima Facie" is making waves on the Cannes market, with three-time Oscar nominee Cynthia Erivo set to star and executive produce under the banner of her production company, Edith’s Daughter. Embankment Films will handle sales, along with UTA Independent Film Group and CAA Media Finance Co.
The Storyline
Erivo will play a British defense lawyer who excels in the ruthless and competitive London court system, impressively defending men charged with sexual assault. However, as she rises to fame, her life takes a dramatic turn, and she must fight to redefine herself. This complex character was originally portrayed by Jodie Comer in the West End and on Broadway.
Production Team
The film adaptation of Suzie Miller’s Olivier-winning and Tony-nominated script will be directed by BAFTA winner Susanna White. The production team includes Greer Simpkin and David Jowsey of Bunya Productions, along with Kevin Loader of Free Range Films, who has produced films like "The Death of Stalin" and "Lady in the Van". Erivo will produce alongside Solome Williams, with Director White and author Miller serving as executive producers.
Previous Developments
A few years ago, the project was initially introduced to buyers on the market with a different cast, but it ultimately didn’t move forward. However, with Erivo on board, the project is now gaining momentum.
Quotes from the Team
Hugo Grumbar of Embankment said, "Suzie’s phenomenal play has been performed in 32 countries. The film promises to be a powerhouse, controversial, and sharp, with tenderness and the best of protective human instincts, brave, and with wit and delicacy." Director Susanna White added, "I’m thrilled to take on the challenge of bringing ‘Prima Facie’ to life on the big screen, and I’m excited to have an actress of Cynthia Erivo’s strength on board."
The Importance of the Film
White also highlighted the importance of the film, stating, "The statistics are astonishing; one in three women have been sexually assaulted, with only a few reported, and less than 2% of attempts end in conviction. This harsh reality deserves the collective emotional experience of today’s curious film audience." Miller commented, "I’m thrilled that the brilliant Cynthia Erivo is on board to play the film version of Prima Facie. Cynthia is a highly talented and nuanced actor who brings the script to life and embodies a brave and dynamic Tessa for the screen."
Representation
Erivo is represented by UTA, Entertainment 360, and Peikoff Mahan, while White is represented by CAA and Casarotto Ramsay & Associates, and Miller is represented by CAA, HLA Management, and The Agency, and Jackoway.
