Foiled Bomb Plot Against Lady Gaga Concert
The Brazilian police announced on Sunday that they had thwarted a bomb plot against a packed Lady Gaga concert in Rio de Janeiro the day before. Two people were arrested in raids carried out in several countries.
Details of the Plot
The suspects recruited participants, including a minor, with the help of improvised explosives and Molotov cocktails, coordinating attacks. The plan was treated as a ‘collective challenge’ to acquire awareness on social media. According to official figures, more than 2 million people were present at the free concert.
Investigation and Arrests
A tip from Rio State Police Intelligence had uncovered online cells that encouraged violent behavior in teenagers. The Ministry of Justice said that those behind the plan were recruiters who identified as members of Lady Gaga’s global fan base, known as "Little Monsters". The police arrested a man who is the leader of the group in the southern state of Rio Grande Do Sul for the illegal possession of a firearm, while a teenager in Rio de Janeiro was also arrested for storing child pornography. The authorities led over a dozen search and confiscation orders in the states of Rio de Janeiro, Mato Grosso, Rio Grande do Sul, and Sao Paulo.
The Concert
The show continued without incident, with fans packing Copacabana Beach. The organizers estimated that 2.1 million people flocked to the beach to see Gaga perform, and thousands had arrived much earlier in the day. The show was paid for by the city government to increase local tourism, and similar concerts are planned to take place every year until at least 2028.
Lady Gaga’s Performance
The show was Gaga’s first in Brazil since 2012. The artist appeared for fans who had gathered on the beach in the evening before the concert, just to see her sound check. "I missed you so much," she told the fans, "I know that this is not the first show here. I know that this is only a sample. It feels like it is the real show." The fans turned the beach into a dance floor as Gaga performed, making the event a huge success.
