Return to Dominance

Normal service was resumed as Bayern Munich rang in the championship and confirmed the title with a game to spare. This marks their 12th title in the last 13 seasons. Given the uncomplicated nature of their victory, it’s easy to forget the turbulence the club faced at the end of last season. Thomas Tuchel left his coaching position, and the club’s preferred candidates, including Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso, made their progress. The key factors for Bayern’s return to the top and what’s next are crucial to understanding their success.

Steady at the Helm

Everyone, including Vincent Kompany, knew that the Belgian coach was far from the first choice for Bayern Munich. He had just been relegated from the English Premier League with Burnley and was inexperienced at the elite level. However, an unbeaten start of 13 games in the league allowed him and the club some breathing room. Kompany’s positive relationships with Bayern players were significant, and he impressed with his handling of the media and player problems like Leon Goretzka’s misfortune at the beginning of the season.

Premier League Pair Boosts Squad

Only a few players leave the wealth of the Premier League for the German top flight, but Bayern has broken the pattern in the past two years with Harry Kane’s obligation last season and Michael Olise. Kane’s exploits were well-documented, and he reached 60 Bundesliga goals, hitting Ering Haaland in April to become the fastest man to score so many. He achieved this in less than two full seasons against every club in the Bundesliga. The signing of the Frenchman Michael Olise from Crystal Palace has provided support for Kane, adding another dimension to Bayern’s attack.

Leverkusen’s Stalled Progress

The cloak of invincibility was shed in Leverkusen’s second game of the season when they slipped up against RB Leipzig. Alonso’s side was dominant but not clinically, allowing Bavaria an early advantage that would never be regained. Leverkusen has only lost once, but a third of their games have ended in draws. This lack of ruthlessness has regularly proven costly. The concern is that local jewel Florian Wirtz will likely leave this summer, and if he chooses Bavaria as his next club, the 2023-24 Bundesliga dominance could look like a mere stepping stone.

Depth of Talent

Kompany would be given even more options in an already stacked squad with the potential addition of Wirtz. Injuries to key players meant defensive reshuffles, while a torn knee tendon ended Jamal Musiala’s season early. Kompany has integrated players like Kim Min-Jae and Konrad Laimer, and his rotations in attack areas were largely successful. The young goalkeeper Jonas Urbig, signed from Cologne this season, has impressed, which can prove advantageous for Bavaria in the long run.

Future Prospects

After Thomas Müller leaves following the World Club Championship in June and July, Kompany will have to look into a future without two stalwarts of the club. However, for now, Bayern can celebrate a 33rd Bundesliga title and Müller’s 13th. The club’s dominance is set to continue, with a strong squad and talented players waiting in the wings.
