Andrew Karpen, the founder and CEO of Bleecker Street Media, has passed away at the age of 59 due to glioblastoma, a rare and aggressive form of brain cancer. Karpen was a well-respected figure in the independent film industry, known for his exceptional leadership and passion for cinema.
A Legacy in Independent Film
Karpen co-founded Bleecker Street Media in 2014 and played a crucial role in the production and distribution of numerous acclaimed films, including works by Steven Soderbergh, Debra Granik, and Oscar-nominated titles such as "Captain Fantastic" and "Trumbo." He was admired for his integrity, honesty, and ability to build trust with his colleagues and partners.
A Brave Battle with Cancer
In January 2024, Karpen was diagnosed with glioblastoma after experiencing unusual symptoms, including numbness in his right leg and difficulty typing. Despite the aggressive nature of the cancer, Karpen underwent a series of treatments, including a full craniotomy, chemotherapy, and radiation. Thanks to the expertise of Dr. John Bockvar, a neurosurgeon at the Lenox Hill Hospital, Karpen was able to recover and even attend his son’s wedding in July.
A Personal Touch

Karpen’s love for football and his family was evident in his dedication to attending Giants games and supporting his loved ones.
