Introduction to Thunderbolts

Marvel is no stranger to rewrites, and Thunderbolts, which debuts this week, is no exception. In contrast to other films under the MCU umbrella, the upcoming film has an interesting connection to an action classic. The director of the film, Jake Schreier, spoke with GamesRadar+ about his inspiration and his connection to John McClane.

The Original Concept

"When [screenwriter] Eric Pearson came up with it [the story] with Brian Chapek, I think that one of the original versions was a kind of Die Hard thing. Or everything would take place in this vault and come out what would have been a very cool thing. I think it was always a little more in the DNA of the film." The vault would have been the original meeting point of all members of the top team, instead of being brought together by a particularly determined Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan). The attempt to find a way out of a closed room is exactly what Die Hard is all about. Bruce Willis was an action star by playing McClane, the most reluctant hero that everyone could wish for.

The Eventual Concept for Thunderbolts

Although this idea would have been fun, the production on which production has ended also has its virtues. Thunderbolts is expected to be about the emotional state of the Black Widow, Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh). Understandably, the assassin is in a dark place while dealing with her sister Natasha’s (Scarlett Johansson) death. The creative team behind the scenes added more context to the character of Bob, played by Lewis Pullman. Thunderbolts will be the debut of the powerful character Sentry in the MCU and needed more development than originally on the side, as Jake Schreier explained.

Character Development

"When I came in for the first time and worked with Eric, [it was] to find this idea of having Bob in the team with [the Thunderbolts]. In the draft before they were in parallel traces, but it felt like they really had to get to know him if we wanted to do this endwork." In true Marvel fashion, this is all that the director could reveal about the upcoming film. Bob and his alter ego have a famous complex and sometimes heartbreaking mythology in the comics, and there is a big question mark about how Thunderbolts will adapt it.

Release Date

With the multiverse in the game, almost everything is fair game, but fans have to wait for the film to be published to get the finer details about the character. Thunderbolts will be released in cinemas on May 2, 2025.

Film Details

The film is directed by Jake Schreier and written by Eric Pearson and Joanna Calo. It is part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise and has a runtime of 126 minutes.
