A Night to Remember: Francis Ford Coppola Honored with AFI Life Achievement Award
Ralph Macchio paid tribute to Francis Ford Coppola, the director who gave him his breakout role in the 1983 film "The Outsiders," at the AFI Life Achievement Award gala in Los Angeles. The event, which took place at the Dolby Theater, was a celebration of Coppola’s remarkable career in film.
A Lesson Learned on Set
Macchio recalled a valuable lesson he learned from Coppola on the set of "The Outsiders." Coppola had given him $5 and told him to try to get through the day, helping him to better understand his character. Macchio said, "You know, I have often considered how I could ever pay him back for everything that it means for me. And the truth is, I will never do it." As a symbol of his gratitude, Macchio returned the $5 to Coppola, saying, "I gave it there so as not to repay the debts, but as a symbol of lessons that I learned from you over 40 years ago."
A Star-Studded Tribute
The gala was attended by numerous celebrities, including Steven Spielberg, Spike Lee, Al Pacino, Robert de Niro, Elle Fanning, and Diane Lane. George Lucas jokingly handed over the calculation, adding to the lighthearted moment. The event was a testament to Coppola’s impact on the film industry and his enduring legacy.
