With only eight episodes, Chemistry lessons is a perfect rush, but an emotional rollercoaster from start to finish.<\/p>\n
The series focuses on Larson’s Elizabeth Zott, a laboratory technician at the Hastings Research Institute, constantly held back by her misogynistic colleagues. However, after hours she secretly conducts her own experiments. Her work caught the attention of Hastings’ star researcher Calvin Evans (Lewis Pullman), who usually prefers to work alone. Attracted by her intelligence, he agrees to let Elizabeth work in his laboratory since her superiors do not allow her to become a chemist herself. The dynamic and blossoming on-screen romance between Larson and Pullman is palpable and heartwarming to watch. In just two episodes, you’ll believe in their love story and want them to live happily ever after.<\/p>\n
Unfortunately, tragedy strikes: Zott loses both her job and access to her research and struggles to make a living while raising a daughter. Although it takes years, Zott finds herself in a role she never thought she would see herself: a cooking show host. Goes from Marie Curie to Martha Stewart, Zott uses her expertise as a chemist to create delicious dishes while inspiring women across the country.<\/p>\n
Although Chemistry lessons is a fictional story, the limited series doesn’t shy away from addressing very real issues of sexism and racism. A subplot involving Harriet Sloane (Aja Naomi King), Zott’s neighbor and best friend, while her participation in the civil rights movement is encouraging, it also serves as a reminder of America’s dark history. One storyline even focuses on the consequences of Zott using her TV platform to promote peaceful protests. Although the show can be more emotional at times, it manages to balance the heartwarming and heartbreaking moments well to give viewers a sense of hope.<\/p>\n
Lessons in Chemistry is an underrated gem in the Apple TV library. Although Captain Marvel is a cosmic being with superpowers, Elizabeth Zott is Larson’s most inspiring role with her appearance in Chemistry lessons perhaps even surpassing her Oscar-winning work in Room. Larson effortlessly manages to portray nearly a decade of joy, heartache, love, and loss in just eight episodes. It’s no surprise that she was nominated for the Actor Awards, Golden Globes, and Emmys for her performance. While it’s great to watch Larson in epic billion-dollar franchises, it’s amazing to see her shine in character-driven dramas like this.<\/p>\n
If you are a fan of shows like The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel or The Queen’s Gambit, Larson’s most underrated drama is a perfect fit, with a strong female lead who isn’t afraid to push the boundaries of gender norms and pursue a career in a male-dominated field. Chemistry lessons is an emotionally and intellectually stimulating limited series that deserves to be considered one of the best shows of the decade. <\/p>\n
