A Texas-based chain has once again been named the best grocery store in America, beating out major rivals such as Amazon, Costco, and Trader Joe’s. San Antonio-based HEB has been named the No. 1 grocery retailer in the U.S. for the fifth time in nine years, according to Dunnhumby’s latest annual grocery store rankings.<\/p>\n
The family-owned business, which was founded in 1905 and operates more than 440 stores, is "firmly established as a top retailer due to its superior ability to offer a combination of better savings, quality, experience, and assortment," the study said. Massachusetts-based Market Basket took second place, followed by Wisconsin-based Woodman’s in third place. \u201cFor the first time, the top three retailers in the United States are all regional chains,\u201d Dunnhumby noted.<\/p>\n
Costco came in at No. 4, followed by Aldi, WinCo Foods, Trader Joe’s, Amazon, Wegmans, and ShopRite rounding out the top 10. Amazon, which topped the rankings in 2021 and 2022, slipped two spots this year, while Sam’s Club fell six spots. The study evaluated 81 major U.S. grocery stores and combined financial performance with survey responses from more than 11,000 American shoppers.<\/p>\n
Participants were asked about prices, quality, convenience, processes, and online ordering. The rankings come at a time when consumers are facing increasing financial pressure. Matt O’Grady, president of the Americas at Dunnhumby, said consumer confidence fell last year amid concerns about rising prices, limited job opportunities, and stagnant wages. "Consumers of all income levels are feeling the pressure and are making more price-conscious decisions," O’Grady said in a statement.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn this environment, building trust with American buyers has never been more important.\u201d According to the December Consumer Price Index (CPI), overall food prices rose 0.7% in December and 3.1% year-on-year. The headline CPI index showed inflation pushed prices up 0.3% last month and 2.7% on an annual basis.
