Grass-fed ground beef distributed to six states has been recalled due to possible E. coli contamination, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service. The recall involves more than 2,800 pounds of raw 90\/10 ground beef that may be contaminated with E. coli O26.<\/p>\n
The affected beef was packaged in 16-ounce packages, with the label reading \u201cForward Farms Grass-Fed Ground Beef,\u201d along with the expiration or freeze date of Jan. 13 and \u201cEst 2083\u201d printed on the side. The products were produced on December 16 and shipped to distributors in California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Pennsylvania, and Washington state for further distribution to retailers.<\/p>\n
The problem was discovered during \u201croutine\u201d testing, with sampling results showing the presence of E. coli O26. People can become sick from Shiga toxin-producing E. coli \u201c28 days (average 34 days) after exposure to the organism.\u201d<\/p>\n
Symptoms of an E. coli infection include stomach cramps, diarrhea, vomiting, bloody stools or urine, fever, and dehydration. In some cases, it can cause hemolytic uremic syndrome, a serious condition that can lead to kidney failure and possibly death. Some people, including those under five, over 65, or with weakened immune systems, are at increased risk of serious complications from an E. coli infection.<\/p>\n
Consumers who purchased the recalled products are urged not to eat them and to throw them away or return them to the point of purchase.
