Central Perk, the iconic coffee shop from the hit TV show "Friends," has come to life in New York’s Times Square. The real-life replica of the popular fake coffee house opens its doors on December 12th, offering a variety of homages to the fabled series and plenty of hot java.<\/p>\n
Jenny Donadio, a 41-year-old "Friends" superfan from New York City, was excited to be among the first to experience the latest slice of "Friends" culture at a preview. "That’s the heart of the whole thing," Donadio said, referring to the location in Times Square. "It’s such a great place to put on an iconic show…You almost feel like a ‘friend’."<\/p>\n
The concept of a "Friends"-inspired coffee shop has been tried before, but this is the first time fans will be able to recreate the iconic store experience at a permanent location in the Big Apple. However, the Central Perk Coffee Company is not a copy of the fictional coffeehouse. Instead, it’s an homage to the show, with familiar classics like the group’s large orange sofa and pop art by Burton Morris.<\/p>\n
Glen Coben, the lead architect and designer behind the project, said the store is intended as a gathering place where people can eat, drink good coffee, and enjoy a community space that reflects the spirit of Central Perk. "We didn\u2019t want to be stuck in 1994," Coben said. "We really wanted to create a place that looks like what Central Perk would look like in 2025."<\/p>\n
The store features plenty of Easter eggs for both casual and die-hard "Friends" fans. For example, the series’ famous "chicks and ducks" appear in concept art next to the toilets, and there’s a pair of metal bookends "A" and "Z", a nod to Chandler’s own set. The menu is also filled with show-themed options, including the "Morning After" yoghurt, the prosciutto sandwich "The Tribbiani", and the "Rachel Green ‘Side’ Salad".<\/p>\n
At the heart of it all is the actual coffee \u2013 the shop brews and sells three signature Central Perk coffee blends: "Pivot" (medium dark roast), "How You Doin’?" (medium roast), and \u201cWe Were on a ‘Coffee’ Break\u201d (dark roast). If you’re looking for the strongest kicks, you can treat yourself to the "Gunther!" kick. Espresso blend. The venue is still waiting on a liquor license, but hopes to have espresso martinis and other cocktails on the menu by the end of January.<\/p>\n
Kathy Choi, a 47-year-old New Yorker who saw \u201cFriends\u201d during its premiere, enjoyed sharing the updated Central Perk with the newest generation of \u201cFriends\u201d fans. "It\u2019s a different generation at this point," Choi said. "The humor remains…It would have been great if they had launched (a cafe like this) years ago.
