Emma Lloyd, the streaming giant’s vice president of partnerships in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, is one of the few media executives shortlisted to replace Alex Mahon as Channel 4’s chief executive.

Background of Emma Lloyd

Ms Lloyd, whose previous employers included Sky, was also a member of the board of Ocado Group, which she resigned from this month after nine years as a non-executive director. She is believed to be a serious contender to head Channel 4. Other candidates include interim CEO Jonathan Allan, who also served as chief commercial officer and chief operating officer.

Recruitment Process

The appointment of a successor to Ms Mahon comes at an important time for the company and the wider public broadcasting sector. The recruitment of Channel 4 board members is technically led by Ofcom, the media regulator, in consultation with Culture Secretary, although the process of hiring a new chief executive is controlled from within the company.

Challenges Facing Channel 4

Channel 4 faces significant financial challenges as usage of traditional television channels shifts and in many cases declines. After abandoning the sale of the company, the board last year unveiled Fast Forward, a five-year strategy aimed at "amplifying its impact across the UK and standing out in a world of global entertainment conglomerates and social media giants".

Previous Leadership

Channel 4 rejected the prospect of privatization under the last Conservative government, with Ms Mahon a particularly vocal opponent of the move. Ms. Mahon’s departure earlier this year led to her quitting to run Superstruct, a music festival company owned by private equity backers. Her name has been linked to the post of BBC director general, which will soon be vacated.

Changes in the Public Broadcasting Sector

There will also be significant changes in the public broadcasting sector if a planned bid by Sky for ITV’s television division leads to a final deal. Discussions between the two companies took place earlier this month. The government has also confirmed a search is underway for a successor to Ofcom chairman.

Introduction to Channel 4’s New Boss A Netflix executive is among the contenders to become the next boss of state broadcaster Channel 4.
