The film brought in £2 million from previews on Wednesday, July 2nd. Directed by Gareth Edwards, the science-fiction blockbuster stars Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, and Mahershala Ali as a team of specialists on a mission to secure life-saving DNA of dinosaurs in dangerous waters.

The Jurassic Park Franchise

Rebirth is the seventh feature overall in the Jurassic Park franchise and the fourth since it was rebooted with Jurassic World in 2015. The 2015 title is the highest-grossing film in the franchise, with a massive opening of £16.8 million and a total of £64.5 million. Jurassic Park still holds the second place, opening with £5 million and ending with £48.8 million – a colossal result for 1993. The last title, 2022’s Jurassic World Dominion, opened at £12.1 million and ended with £35.1 million.

Box Office Expectations

All three previous World titles have opened above the £10 million mark. Although only two films (Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy and A Minecraft Movie) have repeated this feat this year, it would be a good result for Universal if Rebirth can achieve this.

Other New Releases

Next to Rebirth, Mubi is distributing Hot Milk, which opens in 115 cinemas today. This is the directorial debut of British dramatist Rebecca Lenkiewicz, starring Emma Mackey, Fiona Shaw, and Vicky Krieps. Adapted from a 2016 novel by Deborah Levy, Hot Milk follows a mother and daughter traveling to the Spanish coast to find a remedy for the mother’s illness, only to discover a different reality.

Independent Releases

Also opening in cinemas this week is David Cronenberg’s latest body horror, The Shrouds, distributed by Vertigo Releasing in 64 locations. Vincent Cassel plays an innovative businessman and mourning widower who develops a device that communicates with the deceased. Meanwhile, Studiocanal is re-releasing 1991’s Hearts of Darkness in 32 locations, a documentary about the tumultuous production of Francis Ford Coppola’s classic war film Apocalypse Now.

Further Releases

Other new releases include U-Turn in Dino, distributed by AA Films UK, which will be showing in over 81 sites. Anime Limited’s 4K re-release of the Japanese feature The Girl Who Leapt Through Time will be screening in 69 cinemas on Sunday, July 6th. Indian sports title Thammudu will be released by Dreamz Entertainment, and family adventure Jungle Trouble will be released by Miracle Comms and Dazzler Media.

Holding Titles

Warner Bros’ F1 and Universal’s How to Train Your Kite are among the major holding titles this week, alongside Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later.

New Releases in Great Britain and Ireland This weekend, Universal’s Jurassic World Rebirth leads the new publications in Great Britain and Ireland, opening in 688 cinemas.
